Bengal gall mite

The Bengal gall mite (Eriophyes benghalensis) is a specialized pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic mites primarily target Ficus species, especially the Banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis), causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage through their feeding habits and the formation of characteristic leaf galls.

The biology of the Bengal gall mite is defined by its intimate relationship with the host plant tissue. These mites pass through several developmental stages, including egg, larva, protonymph, and adult. Due to their small size and ability to reside within the protective environment of leaf galls, they are often difficult to detect until substantial damage to the plant has already occurred.

The damage caused by Eriophyes benghalensis is characterized by the induction of galls on leaves and young shoots. By injecting enzymes into the plant tissue, the mites stimulate abnormal cell growth. This results in severe leaf distortion, reduction in photosynthetic efficiency, and stunted development of the plant, which often ruins the plant's ornamental value.

In nursery settings and botanical collections, the presence of these mites represents a chronic problem. The population density can increase rapidly during warm, humid conditions, making early identification critical. Because the mites are protected inside the galls, they are shielded from many environmental factors and standard insecticide sprays, requiring specialized management strategies.

Effective control and management of the Bengal gall mite involve several key practices:

• Pruning and destroying infested plant parts immediately upon detection to reduce the mite population.
• Implementing regular inspections of new plant material to prevent the introduction of the pest.
• Applying systemic acaricides that can penetrate plant tissues to target mites sheltered within galls.
• Maintaining optimal plant health to improve the natural resilience of the Ficus specimens against stress.
