Description

The lime gall mite (Eriophyes bistriatus) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. These tiny arachnids are specialized plant feeders that cause morphological changes in the host plant tissues by inducing the formation of specific structures known as galls.

The primary host for this mite is the lime tree (Tilia species). By feeding on the leaf surface, the mites disrupt the normal development of the foliage. This interaction leads to localized cell proliferation, creating protective structures where the mites can feed and reproduce safely while the tree suffers from the damage.

The life cycle of Eriophyes bistriatus is synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. Mated females overwinter protected within the tree buds. Once the buds begin to burst in the spring, the mites migrate to the newly unfolding leaves to start their first generation of the season.

Damage symptoms are characterized by the presence of small, irregularly shaped galls or discoloration on the leaf blades. While individual galls rarely kill the tree, severe infestations can lead to significant leaf curling, premature yellowing, and heavy leaf drop, which stresses the tree and compromises its aesthetic value in landscape design.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical methods. Pruning infested branches and managing leaf litter can help reduce the overwintering population. When chemical intervention is necessary, systemic or contact acaricides should be applied precisely at the time of bud burst to target the mites before they establish their feeding sites.
