The Boxwood mite (Eriophyes buxi) is a member of the Eriophyidae family within the Acariformes order. These microscopic pests specifically target Buxus sempervirens. Unlike spider mites, they are extremely small and cannot be seen with the naked eye, often hiding deep within the plant tissues and buds of the host.
The biology of this mite revolves around the plant's growth cycle. Overwintering occurs as adults inside the terminal buds. As spring temperatures rise, the mites emerge to feed on the sap of developing leaves. This feeding process triggers the host plant to produce abnormal growth, which provides a protected microhabitat for the mites to breed and multiply throughout the summer months.
Symptoms of infestation are highly characteristic: the leaves at the tips of the branches become stunted, thickened, and twisted. Often, the buds become swollen, appearing as small galls. These deformations are irreversible, making the plant look ragged and poorly maintained. In severe cases, the foliage loses its deep green color and takes on a yellowish, sickly appearance.
The economic and aesthetic impact of Eriophyes buxi is significant. While it rarely kills a mature shrub outright, the severe loss of vigor makes the boxwood susceptible to environmental stress and other pathogens, such as blight. Over time, the cumulative effect of continuous sap extraction leads to dieback of branches and potential death of young or weakened plants.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Physical removal of heavily infested branch tips is the first step, as these contain the largest concentrations of the pest. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate miticides during the early spring when the mites are most active. It is vital to ensure thorough coverage of the foliage, especially the undersides of the leaves and the tips of the shoots.
