Description

The Solanum blister mite (Eriophyes cladophthirus) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae, order Acariformes. As a highly specialized mite, it predominantly targets plants in the Solanaceae family, inducing complex developmental abnormalities in foliage and stems through the injection of salivary enzymes during feeding.

The host range of this mite primarily includes cultivated Solanaceous crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants, as well as several wild nightshade species. The mites tend to colonize the most actively growing parts of the plant, specifically apical meristems, young leaves, and floral buds, where they thrive in the nutrient-rich environment of expanding plant cells.

The biological life cycle of Eriophyes cladophthirus is intimately linked to the availability of its host. The mites typically overwinter as adult females sheltered within plant debris or on alternative evergreen hosts. As seasonal temperatures rise, the population migrates to new growth, rapidly reproducing and spreading through wind dispersal or mechanical contact during cultivation processes.

The most distinctive damage caused by this species is the formation of dense, felt-like structures known as erinea on the underside of leaves and along stems.
