Description

The Cymbopogon gall mite (Eriophyes cymbopogonis) is a microscopic pest classified within the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These mites are highly specialized, often living and feeding exclusively on specific host plants, primarily within the Cymbopogon genus, such as lemongrass.

The mite predominantly attacks the tender tissues of its host plant. It colonizes the base of the leaf sheaths and the growing tips of the grass. Because of their microscopic size, they often remain undetected until significant physiological damage has already occurred, making early detection a critical factor in crop management.

The life cycle of Eriophyes cymbopogonis is adapted to environmental conditions favorable for tropical and subtropical grasses. Reproduction is rapid, consisting of egg, larval, and adult stages. Under ideal conditions of humidity and temperature, the population can explode within weeks, as multiple overlapping generations thrive within the protected environment of the plant's leaf base.

Damage is characterized by the formation of galls, severe leaf distortion, and stunted growth. The mites inject substances during feeding that trigger the plant to produce abnormal tissue growths. This not only impairs the plant's overall health but also drastically reduces the yield and quality of the essential oils extracted from the infected stalks.

Effective management relies on a multi-faceted approach. Agricultural practices, such as the destruction of crop residues and the selection of mite-free propagation material, are fundamental. When necessary, chemical control using systemic or contact acaricides is applied, specifically targeting the periods when mites are migrating from old tissues to new, succulent growth.
