The poplar gall mite (Eriophyes dioicae) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic, eriophyid mites that have evolved to feed specifically on the tissues of various poplar tree species, inducing the formation of specific growths known as galls.
The primary hosts of this mite are poplars, including those used in urban landscaping and forestry. While they do not affect agricultural crops, their presence can be highly problematic for nurseries and municipal maintenance, as they detract from the aesthetic value of public green spaces.
