The aspen gall mite (Eriophyes dispar) is an arachnid belonging to the family Eriophyidae within the order Trombidiformes. These microscopic pests are obligate parasites that specialize in colonizing various species of poplar trees, with a strong preference for Populus tremula (common aspen).
The primary host plants for this species are members of the Populus genus. The mite's activity is largely restricted to the tender parts of the tree, specifically targeting developing leaf buds and emerging foliage during the spring and summer months.
The life cycle involves overwintering as fertilized females hidden beneath the protective scales of dormant buds. As the buds break in the spring, the mites emerge to feed on the succulent plant tissues. This feeding activity releases biochemical agents that force the tree to produce galls, providing a habitat for subsequent generations of mites.
The damage caused by Eriophyes dispar is characterized by the formation of distinctive, often unsightly galls on the leaf surfaces. While usually not lethal, severe infestations can lead to substantial foliage deformity, photosynthetic disruption, and physiological stress that weakens the tree over successive seasons.
