Description
Systematic position: Eriophyes emarginatae is classified within the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae (four-legged mites). These are extremely small arthropods that cannot be seen with the naked eye, known for inducing the formation of abnormal tissue growth, known as galls, on their host plants.
Host plants: The primary host for this mite is the bird cherry tree (Prunus padus). While they are typically considered minor pests in forest ecosystems, they can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage to ornamental Prunus species planted in gardens and urban parks.
Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as fertilized females in protected niches such as bud scales or bark crevices. As the tree breaks dormancy in the spring, the mites move to the developing leaves. By feeding on the leaf tissues, they inject saliva that triggers the plant to grow protective structures, providing a safe environment for the mites to reproduce.
Damage symptoms and harmfulness: The most prominent sign of infestation is the appearance of diverse galls on the leaf surface. These galls can vary in color and shape, often causing the leaves to become distorted or curled.
