Description
The walnut leaf gall mite (lat. Eriophyes erineus) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. This tiny, microscopic arachnid is a specialized pest that primarily targets walnut trees, causing significant concern for orchard owners and gardeners.
The host plant for this mite is the walnut tree. The pest feeds on the internal leaf tissue, inducing the plant to create abnormal growth patterns. Because the mites are so small, damage is often noticed only after the visual symptoms have already become well-established on the foliage.
Regarding its biology, the mites overwinter as adult females in the protective shelter of leaf buds or bark crevices. As the tree breaks dormancy in the spring, the mites emerge and colonize the new leaves. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, leading to potential outbreaks during warm, dry weather conditions.
The primary symptom of infestation is the formation of erinea—patches of velvety, hair-like growth on the undersides of the leaves. Initially, these patches appear white, later turning brownish-red or yellow. On the upper leaf surface, these patches correspond to distinct raised swellings or galls, which significantly impair the leaf's ability to photosynthesize.
- Implement strict orchard sanitation by collecting and disposing of fallen leaves.
- Apply targeted acaricides during early spring, specifically at bud break and leaf expansion.
