Fuchsia gall mite

Taxonomic position: The fuchsia gall mite (Eriophyes fuchsiae) is classified within the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic arthropods are highly specialized parasites that exclusively target plants belonging to the Fuchsia genus.

Host plants: This pest primarily infests various species and cultivars of fuchsia. In nurseries and domestic gardens, the mite causes severe growth disturbances, often resulting in the total loss of the plant's ornamental value if left untreated for an extended period.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the fuchsia gall mite is strictly internal to the host plant. By living inside the galls they induce, these mites are protected from most environmental stressors and contact-based pesticides. They are disseminated via wind, water splashes during irrigation, and physical contact with infested cuttings or contaminated gardening tools.

Character of damage and impact: The infestation manifests as abnormal tissue proliferation known as galls, usually occurring on shoot tips and young leaves. The resulting distorted, thickened, and reddish or yellowish growth inhibits normal flower production and stunts the overall development of the plant. The damage is often irreversible once the galls are well-established.
