Imperata gall mite

Systematic position. Eriophyes imperata belongs to the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and the family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic mites characterized by their elongated, vermiform bodies and only two pairs of legs located at the anterior end. They are highly host-specific, primarily infesting monocotyledonous plants.

Host plants and damage. This species is primarily associated with grasses, specifically Imperata cylindrica (Cogon grass). The mites induce the formation of galls, distorted leaves, and stunted growth. The visual symptoms include characteristic yellowing or localized discoloration where the mites feed, which significantly reduces the aesthetic and physiological quality of the host plant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Eriophyes imperata is closely synchronized with the growth phases of the host plant. Overwintering occurs as adult females hidden within the leaf sheaths or dormant buds. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites become active, migrate to young leaf tissues, and begin feeding and reproducing rapidly through several successive generations throughout the summer.

Impact on plants. The primary economic damage results from the metabolic disruption caused by the mite’s feeding activity, which injects toxic saliva into the plant cells. This causes cell proliferation, leading to the formation of galls. Furthermore, these mites often act as vectors for various plant viruses, causing systemic infections that are far more damaging than the feeding injury alone.

Control measures. Management of Eriophyes imperata is challenging due to the mite’s protected habitat within plant tissues. Cultural control, such as removing and destroying infested plant material, is the first line of defense. Chemical control involves the application of specialized acaricides during the peak migration periods; however, thorough coverage is essential to reach the mites residing in sheltered areas.
