Grape erineum mite
Eriophyes insidiosus
Description
The Grape erineum mite (Eriophyes insidiosus) is a member of the Eriophyidae family, known as gall or rust mites, belonging to the order Acariformes. These microscopic pests are significant actors in viticulture, often causing localized damage that can escalate if management strategies are not implemented.
The pest primarily infests Vitis species, particularly the common grapevine. It is highly host-specific, spending its entire life cycle on the host plant, where it feeds on the epidermal cells of the leaves, triggering abnormal growth and metabolic changes in the leaf tissue.
Regarding its life cycle, the mite overwinters as adult females in sheltered areas such as dormant buds, crevices in the bark, or under leaf scales. When temperatures rise in the spring, the mites emerge and move to the developing young leaves to initiate feeding and egg-laying, leading to multiple generations throughout the growing season.
The damage is highly distinctive: the mites induce the formation of galls that appear as bumps on the upper leaf surface, while the underside becomes lined with a thick, felt-like mass of hair-like structures. While generally not fatal to the vine, severe infestations can significantly reduce the photosynthetic area, potentially impacting yield and vine vigor.
- Monitor vineyards regularly during early spring for signs of early galling.
- Apply acaricides during the bud-burst stage to target migrating overwintered mites.
- Ensure adequate vine spacing and pruning to facilitate better spray coverage.
- Consider biological control options where predatory mites are present in the ecosystem.
- Remove and destroy heavily infested clippings or leaves to reduce local population pressure.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this mite. Since the pest is protected inside its felt-like galls, direct contact with chemical treatments is difficult during mid-summer. Therefore, timing the chemical application during the migration phase in early spring is the most effective approach for successful population management.
