Lime leaf gall mite

The lime leaf gall mite (Eriophyes leiosoma) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae and the order Acariformes. As a specialized parasite, it exclusively targets linden or lime trees (Tilia), where it induces the formation of distinct, localized leaf deformations known as galls.

The biological cycle of this mite is highly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adult females overwinter protected beneath the bud scales of the lime tree. As spring approaches and bud burst begins, the mites migrate to the emerging leaf tissue, initiating the gall formation process through their feeding activity, which triggers abnormal cell growth in the leaves.

The visual symptoms of an infestation are quite diagnostic. The upper surface of the leaves displays small, raised bumps, while the corresponding underside is covered in dense, fuzzy, felt-like patches. These structures serve as protective chambers where the mites feed and complete several generations throughout the growing season, effectively sheltering themselves from environmental stresses.

The economic and aesthetic impact is primarily seen in the premature senescence of the foliage. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial leaf drop, which impairs the tree's photosynthetic capability and overall vigor. While usually not lethal to mature trees, the mite significantly compromises the aesthetic value of street trees and ornamental plantings.

Effective management strategies for controlling the mite include:

• Pruning and removing branches showing heavy gall infestation.
• Applying acaricides specifically during the bud-break stage to target emerging mites.
• Maintaining healthy soil conditions and adequate watering to improve tree resilience.
• Practicing good sanitation by removing and composting or burning fallen leaves in autumn.
