Gall mite Eriophyes lineatus

Eriophyes lineatus

Description

Systematic position of this pest places it within the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and the family Eriophyidae (gall mites). These microscopic mites are highly specialized plant parasites that induce complex tissue malformations, known as galls, while remaining hidden within the host plant structure.

Host plants for this species are primarily trees and shrubs of the Salix genus (willows). The mite is a known pest that frequently colonizes various willow species, leading to significant infestations in both wild stands and ornamental landscape settings, which can decrease the overall health and ornamental value of the plants.

Biology and life cycle consist of eggs, two nymphal stages, and adults. The mites overwinter in protected areas, such as bark crevices or under bud scales. With the arrival of spring and the resumption of sap flow, the overwintered females emerge to feed on the developing buds and young leaves, initiating the gall formation process through their feeding activity.

Damage and economic importance are characterized by the development of leaf galls. Inside these galls, the mites create colonies, causing localized leaf deformation, chlorosis, and premature senescence. In severe infestation cases, the total leaf surface area is reduced, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and potential dieback of infested twigs.

Control measures require an integrated approach focusing on mechanical and chemical interventions. Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches during the dormant season is a primary method for reducing overwintering populations. When infestations are extensive, the strategic use of acaricides during the period of mite migration in spring helps prevent the establishment of new galls.

  • Sanitary pruning and destruction of infested plant materials.
  • Chemical control using targeted acaricides during bud break.
  • Monitoring plant health to detect early signs of gall formation.
