Apple leaf-curling mite

Systematic position: This pest belongs to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and the family Eriophyidae (gall mites). Unlike other mite species, these are extremely tiny, vermiform in shape, and possess only four legs, which allows them to move effectively across the leaf surface and inhabit the tissues of their host plant.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the domestic apple tree (Malus domestica). It frequently targets commercial orchards and home gardens, particularly focusing on tender young leaves. While it is highly host-specific, a heavy infestation can cause significant physiological stress to the tree, impacting the overall health and vigor of the orchard.

Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as adults, finding shelter under the bud scales or in crevices of the tree bark. As soon as the buds begin to burst in the spring, the mites migrate to the newly developing leaves. Several generations may occur throughout the growing season, with population peaks often coinciding with warm and humid periods during the summer.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The most distinctive sign of infestation is the curling of the leaf margins inward, forming a tight roll or gall. These deformed structures protect the colonies from predators and environmental stress. Infected leaves often show chlorosis or reddish discoloration, which reduces the photosynthetic area and leads to stunted growth and potentially lower fruit quality.
