Description

The Grape leaf blister mite (Eriophyes paderinus, often classified as Colomerus vitis) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. It is a well-known pest in viticulture that specifically targets grapevines, causing distinct physiological and morphological changes to the host plant.

This mite species feeds exclusively on grapevine tissues. It is particularly common in vineyards where canopy management is neglected. Poor ventilation, dense foliage, and high humidity levels create an ideal environment for the pest to colonize leaves rapidly during the growing season.

The biological cycle begins with fertilized females overwintering in protected sites, such as the crevices of bark or deep inside dormant buds. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge and migrate to the newly developing leaves. Throughout the summer, multiple overlapping generations are produced, leading to a exponential increase in the population size.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily visual and functional. They induce the formation of erinea—patches of white, dense, hair-like outgrowths on the underside of the leaves. As the season progresses, these patches turn reddish or dark brown. These blisters disrupt the photosynthetic activity of the leaf, which can lead to reduced vine vigor and potential yield loss if the infestation is severe.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the best approach to control this pest. Key strategies include:

  • Maintaining an open vine canopy through proper pruning and training to prevent humidity build-up.
  • Applying dormant oil treatments to kill overwintering mites.
  • Using sulfur-based sprays or systemic acaricides during the early stages of infestation.
  • Monitoring the vineyard regularly to detect the first signs of blister formation.
  • Effective management requires consistent observation. By removing severely infected leaves early in the season and ensuring proper vineyard hygiene, growers can manage mite populations without relying solely on intensive chemical applications, thus preserving the health of the entire vineyard ecosystem.
