Description
The cherry gall mite (Eriophyes padi) is a member of the Eriophyidae family, known as four-legged mites. These microscopic pests are specialized feeders that cause the development of characteristic leaf galls, which serve as both their feeding sites and shelters.
The primary hosts of this mite are cherry and sweet cherry trees (Prunus species). The infestation typically affects young leaves during the early vegetative period, impacting the photosynthetic capacity and overall health of the host plant.
Regarding its biology, Eriophyes padi overwinters as adults within the bud scales of the host tree. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites migrate to the newly emerging leaves. They feed on the epidermal cells, triggering abnormal plant cell growth that results in the formation of galls.
The damage caused by the cherry gall mite appears as dense clusters of small, pin-like or bulbous galls on the upper or lower leaf surfaces. While usually not lethal to the tree, severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in fruit set if the tree is chronically stressed.
Effective management requires integrated pest management strategies. Chemical control is most effective when applied during the bud-burst stage, before the galls have fully closed. Furthermore, sanitation practices, such as pruning and destroying heavily infested twigs, help to reduce the overwintering population of the mites for the following season.
