Description

Systematic position: Eriophyes reyesi belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic organisms, known as four-legged mites, are specialized parasites that cause significant structural changes in the host plant tissues by injecting saliva during feeding.

Crops damaged: The primary host for this pest is the grapevine (Vitis spp.). The mite typically colonizes the undersides of leaves, although in severe infestations, it can migrate to other succulent parts of the plant, potentially affecting the development of young shoots.

Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as fertilized females hidden within bud scales or deep bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge and migrate to newly developing foliage. Throughout the growing season, they undergo several generations, with their development rate highly correlated with warm temperatures, allowing population explosions if left unchecked.

Damage and economic impact: The presence of these mites leads to the formation of erinea—distinctive felt-like patches on the underside of leaves, initially white and turning brown. On the upper surface, these areas manifest as blister-like galls. This damage impairs leaf respiration and photosynthesis, leading to reduced vine vigor, poor fruit set, and decreased grape quality.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Eriophyes reyesi. Strategies include the application of specific acaricides or sulfur-based products during the early stages of bud break before the galls become too dense. Regular vineyard scouting is crucial, and removing heavily infested shoots early in the season can significantly reduce the overall population pressure in the vineyard.
