Taxonomic position: The birch gall mite (Eriophyes rudis) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic mites are specialized parasites that live within the protective tissues of their host plants.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this mite are birch trees (genus Betula), including silver birch and downy birch. It is considered a significant pest in nursery stocks and urban landscape plantings, where the integrity of the tree's architecture is essential.
Biology and life cycle: Adult females overwinter inside the birch buds, protected by bud scales or deep within the bud tissue. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites emerge and colonize new developing buds to feed and reproduce.
