Description

The rowan gall mite (Eriophyes sorbeus) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae and the order Acariformes. These tiny arachnids are specialized plant feeders that cause abnormal growth in leaf tissue, known as galls, which are characteristic of their presence on host plants.

The primary host for this mite is the rowan tree (genus Sorbus). The mite feeds by piercing plant cells and injecting saliva, which induces the plant to create gall structures. These structures provide both a food source and a protected environment for the mites to develop and reproduce safely.

The life cycle of the rowan gall mite is synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. Adult females typically overwinter within the dormant buds of the rowan tree. As temperatures rise in spring and the buds begin to swell and burst, the mites emerge to feed on the tender, newly emerged leaf tissues, beginning the first cycle of reproduction.

Damage caused by the mite is easily recognizable by the formation of small, bumpy swellings or galls on the upper surface of the leaves. These galls often turn red or brown as they mature. Severe infestations can lead to significant leaf curling, premature yellowing, and leaf drop, which can stress the tree and reduce its overall vitality and aesthetic appeal.

Management strategies focus on reducing the overwintering population and preventing spring spread. Sanitation, such as raking and removing infested fallen leaves, is a crucial first step. In cases of heavy infestation, applying effective acaricides during the bud-break stage is necessary. Careful monitoring during early spring is recommended to time treatments accurately for maximum efficacy.
