Description
Systematic position. Eriophyes stefanii belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and the family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic, vermiform mites that are highly host-specific, primarily feeding on the soft tissues of their target plants.
Host plants. The primary host for this species is the true pistachio (Pistacia vera). It is a well-known pest in regions where pistachio cultivation is a significant agricultural activity, particularly in areas with arid or semi-arid climates where these trees thrive.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this gall mite is closely synchronized with the phenology of the pistachio tree. Adult females overwinter in dormant buds or crevices in the bark. As the tree breaks dormancy in the spring, the mites emerge to infest new shoots and leaves, where they start feeding and laying eggs, leading to a rapid succession of generations during the warmer months.
