Systematic position: The sycamore gall mite (Eriophyes sycamori) is classified within the order Acariformes, family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic, worm-like mites that are specialized parasites of woody plants, specifically triggering the development of abnormal plant tissue structures.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this mite are species of the Platanus genus, including the London plane and American sycamore. They are commonly found in urban forestry, public parks, and ornamental landscapes where plane trees are frequently planted as shade trees.

Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as fertilized females under the bud scales of the host tree. As buds begin to open in spring, the mites move onto the developing leaves to feed. Throughout the growing season, multiple overlapping generations occur, with the mites living and reproducing protected within the galls they induce on the leaf surface.

Nature of damage and harm: The presence of Eriophyes sycamori is marked by the formation of numerous galls on the leaves. These galls can cause leaf distortion, discoloration, and premature senescence. While rarely lethal to mature trees, heavy infestations can lead to significant aesthetic damage and reduced tree vigor due to impaired photosynthesis.
