Thuja mite
Eriophyes thujae
Description
The Thuja mite (Eriophyes thujae) is a microscopic pest classified within the Eriophyidae family of the Acariformes order. These tiny, four-legged mites are specialized parasites that primarily infest various species of Thuja. Being extremely small, they often go unnoticed by gardeners until significant aesthetic damage becomes visible on the host plant.
These mites colonize the interior of the scale-like foliage of conifers, feeding on the plant's cell contents. Their activity is localized within the needles, which protects them from environmental factors and makes contact pesticide applications challenging. They primarily damage the foliage of Thuja occidentalis and related varieties, causing the plant to lose its typical dense, vibrant appearance.
The biology of Eriophyes thujae is synchronized with the growth cycles of the host plant. Overwintering females emerge from their hiding spots beneath the leaf scales in early spring as temperatures rise. The lifecycle is relatively short, allowing for several generations to develop throughout the growing season, especially in favorable weather conditions that encourage rapid population growth.
Infestation manifests as discoloration, typically turning the affected foliage yellow or brown, which is often misdiagnosed as physiological stress or drought. As the mite population increases, the damage leads to stunted shoot growth, premature needle drop, and in severe cases, the dieback of whole branches. Long-term infestation significantly weakens the tree, making it susceptible to other opportunistic pathogens.
Control strategies require the targeted application of acaricides. Because the mites reside within the plant tissue, systemic products are often more effective than contact ones. Regular monitoring is essential to catch the infestation early in the season. Proper cultural practices, including correct watering and preventing overcrowding of plantings, help maintain plant vigor and improve tolerance to pest pressure.
- Conduct regular inspections of Thuja foliage for yellowing spots.
- Apply specialized acaricides during the active spring migration.
- Prune and destroy severely infested branches to reduce the population.
- Ensure adequate plant spacing to promote airflow through the canopy.
