Systematic position: Ernobius explanatus is classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae (death-watch beetles). These insects are significant wood-boring pests that play a critical role in the decomposition of coniferous organic matter, often acting as primary or secondary pests in forestry.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are various species of the genus Picea (spruces). They are also known to occasionally infest fir trees (Abies). The beetles typically target weakened or stressed trees, as well as logs left on the forest floor, which provide an ideal breeding ground for their larvae.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Ernobius explanatus typically lasts between one and two years. Adult females lay eggs in the crevices of the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the bark and feed on the cambium and sapwood. This phase is characterized by intense feeding, which allows the larvae to complete their development before pupating within the wood.

Damage and economic impact: The damage is primarily caused by larval tunneling, which disrupts the tree's vascular system. By creating complex gallery networks in the subcortical tissue, the larvae weaken the tree, leading to crown thinning, reduced growth, and sometimes tree mortality. In industrial forestry, these beetles degrade the quality of harvested timber.
