Description
The genus Erynnis, commonly known as duskywings, belongs to the family Hesperiidae of the order Lepidoptera. While many species are ecologically important, their larvae can occasionally act as pests when their populations rise in or near agricultural fields containing host plants.
These insects primarily target plants within the Fabaceae (legume) family. Crops such as clover, vetch, and alfalfa can serve as hosts. In intensive farming systems, the presence of these larvae on forage crops requires careful monitoring to ensure that biomass production is not compromised.
The biological development of Erynnis follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is synchronized with the availability of host foliage. Females deposit eggs directly on the undersides of leaves, and the resulting larvae emerge to feed immediately, progressing through several larval instars.
Damage symptoms include irregular leaf notches and skeletonized leaf tissue. The larvae are known for constructing shelters by folding leaves and binding them with silk, which serves as both protection from predators and a refuge during feeding. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation and reduced photosynthetic capacity.
Effective control strategies focus on integrated management. Maintaining clean field margins by removing wild legume weeds reduces initial infestation pressure. When economic thresholds are met, applications of targeted insecticides are advised, ensuring proper coverage to penetrate the silk-bound shelters where the larvae reside.
