Description
The Dingy Skipper (Erynnis tages) is a butterfly belonging to the family Hesperiidae within the order Lepidoptera. In agricultural settings, it is recognized as a potential pest of various leguminous crops. While not always considered a primary threat, its larvae can cause localized defoliation, particularly in pastures and forage crops.
The host plants for the larvae consist primarily of members of the Fabaceae family. Preferred species include Lotus corniculatus (Bird's-foot trefoil), Lathyrus (vetchlings), and Coronilla (crown vetches). When these plants are grown commercially for fodder, heavy infestation can lead to biomass reduction and reduced nutritional quality for livestock.
The life cycle of E. tages is univoltine in most environments, meaning one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a larva in a silk-lined nest made from leaves. Pupation occurs in the spring, and adults emerge between late spring and mid-summer. Females oviposit on the underside of host plant leaves, ensuring larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.
Damage is characterized by larval feeding on the leaf epidermis and parenchyma. The larvae create shelters by spinning leaves together with silk, which provides protection from predators. From within these shelters, they skeletonize or consume large portions of the leaf tissue, which inhibits photosynthesis and weakens the plant during critical growth phases.
