The Lima bean pod borer (Etiella zinckenella) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a significant pest of various leguminous crops globally, capable of causing substantial economic losses in agricultural production, particularly in warm temperate and tropical regions.
This pest has a wide host range among the Fabaceae family. It predominantly attacks soybeans, peas, lentils, beans, and lupines. By feeding directly on the developing seeds within the pods, the larvae cause irreparable damage, rendering the harvest unsuitable for commercial use or seed purposes.
The life cycle of the moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the surface of young pods or flowers. Once the larvae emerge, they bore into the pods to feed on the seeds. The pupal stage typically occurs in the soil, protected by a silken cocoon, which is where the insect overwinters.
Damage symptoms are primarily detected by observing holes in the pods and the presence of frass (larval excrement) inside. Infested pods show signs of premature yellowing and drying. As the larvae consume the seeds, they create tunnels, often leading to secondary infections from fungi or bacteria that thrive in the damaged tissue.
