Description
Systematic position. The pea pod borer (Etiella grisea) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a highly specialized pest that targets leguminous crops, often causing significant economic losses in global agricultural production by reducing both grain yield and quality.
Host plants. The insect primarily affects pulse crops. It is most damaging to soybean, chickpea, lentil, lupine, and peas. The larvae feed exclusively on the reproductive organs of the plants, specifically boring into the pods to consume the developing seeds inside, making the crop unsuitable for processing or storage.
Biology and life cycle. The adult moth has a wing span of approximately 20-25 mm with cryptic coloration. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae overwinter in the soil within protective cocoons. As temperatures rise in early summer, adults emerge, mate, and lay eggs on the surface of young pods or flower buds.
Damage and severity. The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which drill holes into pods and feed on the developing seeds. This leads to substantial seed weight loss and physical damage. Infested pods often show signs of web spinning and may prematurely ripen, split, or rot due to the introduction of pathogens through the entry holes created by the larvae.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Key strategies include:
- Utilizing pheromone traps for population monitoring.
- Deep tillage in autumn to destroy overwintering larvae in the soil.
- Adopting early-maturing varieties to avoid peak pest activity.
- Applying insecticides during the egg-laying or early larval emergence phases to minimize damage.
