Lettuce moth

The lettuce moth (Eucosma conterminana) belongs to the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a specialized pest that primarily affects lettuce crops (Lactuca sativa). In commercial agriculture, it is recognized as a significant threat to seed production due to its larvae's tendency to infest the reproductive structures of the plant.

The adult moth is relatively small, with a wingspan of approximately 16 to 19 mm. Its forewings exhibit a mottled pattern of ochreous and greyish-brown shades, providing excellent camouflage against soil and foliage. The larvae, which are the damaging stage, are typically greenish or pale yellow, often blending perfectly with the developing flower buds of the lettuce.

The life cycle of Eucosma conterminana involves complete metamorphosis. The species typically overwinters as a pupa within a silk cocoon embedded in the soil. Adults emerge during the warmer months. After mating, females deposit eggs on the capitula (flower heads) of the host plants, ensuring that the neonate larvae have immediate access to their primary food source.

The damage caused by the larvae is primarily focused on the interior of the lettuce flower buds and developing seed heads. By feeding on the florets and seed embryos, the larvae disrupt seed maturation and can destroy entire flower heads. This behavior leads to significant yield losses in lettuce seed crops, often resulting in stunted or failed seed development.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this moth. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep autumn plowing to disturb pupation sites, and the removal of wild host plants from the Asteraceae family are critical. Biological control using microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis can be highly effective when timed with early larval emergence.
