Systematic position: The pest Eucosma schistaceana, often scientifically referred to as Tetramoera schistaceana, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a highly specialized moth species that has evolved to colonize and feed primarily on sugarcane plants across various tropical regions.

Host crops and damage profile: The primary host is sugarcane. The larvae tunnel into the young, succulent shoots of the plant. This internal feeding causes the death of the central shoot, a condition known as "dead heart," which stunts plant growth and significantly inhibits the overall development of the cane stalk.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on the foliage near the base of the plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately seek out the growing point of the cane to initiate boring. The duration of each stage is heavily dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels.

Economic impact: This pest is a major threat to agricultural productivity. Beyond the direct damage to the physical structure of the stem, the tunneling activity leads to reduced biomass and lower sucrose concentration in the juice.
