Description
The European grapevine moth (Lobesia botrana), historically associated with the genus Eudemis, is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is recognized globally as a major threat to viticulture, capable of causing substantial economic losses if not managed properly.
The moth primarily targets grapevines. Larvae feed on various parts of the plant throughout the growing season. The first generation typically infests flower clusters, while subsequent generations feed on the berries, boring into them and creating webbing that facilitates the spread of pathogens.
The biology of this pest is highly dependent on climate conditions. Depending on the latitude, the moth completes between two and four generations annually. It overwinters as a pupa within a silken cocoon, typically hidden in the bark of vine trunks or other sheltered locations, emerging as an adult in early spring.
The damage caused is twofold: direct feeding damage and indirect damage through the promotion of fungal diseases. As the larvae move between berries within a cluster, they leave behind frass and damaged tissue, which makes the fruit susceptible to secondary infections like Botrytis cinerea (grey mold).
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key components include:
- Monitoring population levels using pheromone traps.
- Mating disruption techniques to reduce overall population density.
- Application of biological control agents and targeted insecticides during peak larval emergence.
- Cultural practices that improve canopy ventilation to reduce humidity, making the environment less favorable for the pest.
