Eugamasus berlesei is a predatory soil mite belonging to the order Mesostigmata and the family Parasitidae. While typically known as predators of small soil-dwelling organisms, they can occasionally act as opportunistic pests, feeding on the tender root tissues of young seedlings and crops grown in high-humidity indoor environments.
These mites are commonly found in organic-rich substrates, greenhouses, and compost-heavy soils. In commercial agriculture, they thrive in protected cultivation systems where constant moisture and organic matter provide a stable environment for continuous reproduction throughout the growing season.
The life cycle progresses through the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Favorable conditions include high humidity and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Their rapid generation time allows populations to explode quickly if moisture levels are not strictly managed in the nursery or greenhouse beds.
Damage to plants is primarily caused by feeding on root hairs and the epidermis of root tips. This results in nutrient uptake deficiency, stunting of the plant, wilting, and secondary colonization by fungal pathogens. In sensitive crops, severe infestations can lead to significant losses in plant vigor and overall yield.
