Description
The genus Parasitus belongs to the family Parasitidae, within the order Mesostigmata. While often found in soil as decomposers, these mites can become opportunistic pests in greenhouses, mushroom farms, and nurseries where conditions are ideal for their population growth.
Crops most susceptible to infestation include vegetable seedlings, ornamental potted plants, and mushroom mycelium. The mites are attracted to high-moisture environments and decaying organic matter, which provide both habitat and a potential food source for their development.
The biological cycle of Parasitus includes egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and adult. Their development is highly dependent on environmental variables like humidity and substrate composition. They exhibit high mobility and can quickly spread throughout a greenhouse facility if left unchecked.
Damage occurs primarily to the root system and stem bases of tender plants. Feeding activity weakens the plant structure, leading to stunted growth and yellowing. Furthermore, the feeding wounds facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria.
