Cocoa borer

Eulophonotus myrmeleon is a destructive species of moth belonging to the Cossidae family. Recognized as a primary stem borer in cocoa cultivation, it poses a significant threat to the longevity and productivity of Theobroma cacao trees, particularly within the humid tropical ecosystems of the African continent.

The host range is predominantly limited to cocoa plants. The larvae exhibit a cryptic behavior, boring into the bark and penetrating deep into the xylem and phloem tissues of the trunk and branches. This internal feeding pattern makes them notoriously difficult to manage once the infestation is established inside the woody plant tissues.

The life cycle begins when eggs are laid on the surface of the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the wood. They remain protected within the gallery throughout their larval stage, growing and consuming the internal tissues. The duration of this cycle can vary, often influenced by environmental temperatures and the host tree's physiological status.

The damage caused by Eulophonotus myrmeleon is severe. By excavating tunnels, the larvae disrupt the vascular system of the cocoa tree, leading to wilting, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary pathogenic infections. In severe cases, the structural integrity of the main trunk is compromised, leading to tree snapping or complete death.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to pest control. Strategies should focus on prevention and sanitation to reduce the population density. Key interventions include:

• Manual removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts.
• Application of systemic insecticides directly into the larval galleries.
• Maintaining plantation health to improve natural tree resistance.
• Monitoring emergence patterns to time potential treatments effectively.
