Brown-tail moth

Euproctis signata

Description

The Brown-tail moth (Euproctis signata) is a significant pest belonging to the family Erebidae within the order Lepidoptera. While often confused with related species, this moth is recognized for its larvae's ability to cause widespread defoliation in a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs throughout their geographical range.

This pest infests a broad spectrum of host plants, preferring fruit trees such as apple, pear, cherry, and plum, as well as forest trees including oak, lime, and birch. Large populations can completely strip a tree of its foliage, which severely stresses the plant, reduces photosynthetic capacity, and weakens the tree's overall health and yield potential.

The life cycle of the Brown-tail moth typically involves one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in communal silken webs spun around leaves and attached to twigs. In the spring, as buds begin to burst, the larvae emerge to feed on the tender young leaves, growing rapidly as temperatures rise and eventually pupating within cocoons woven between leaves.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by skeletonization of leaves, progressing to total destruction of the leaf tissue. Beyond the botanical damage, the larvae possess urticating hairs that contain toxins. These hairs can cause severe skin irritation, rashes, and respiratory issues in humans who come into contact with them, making management a safety priority.

Effective management requires early intervention. The most reliable control method is the pruning and destruction of overwintering webs during the winter months when the trees are dormant. During the spring and summer, if infestations are heavy, biological controls or targeted insecticide applications may be necessary to protect foliage and ensure the health of the orchard.
