Sunn pest
Eurygaster
Description
The Sunn pest (Eurygaster integriceps) is a notorious insect pest belonging to the family Scutelleridae, order Hemiptera. It is considered one of the most destructive pests of cereal crops worldwide, capable of causing widespread yield losses and significant reduction in grain quality across temperate regions.
The primary hosts of the Sunn pest are cereal grasses, particularly wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Wheat is the most preferred host, providing the necessary nutrients for the development of both the overwintering adults and the rapidly growing nymphs during the spring and early summer grain-filling stages.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. Adults spend the winter in diapause under the leaf litter of forest edges, orchards, or shrubs. Upon the arrival of spring temperatures, they migrate to cereal fields. After mating, females lay eggs on the leaves of plants, and the resulting nymphs progress through five instars, continuously feeding on plant tissues and developing grains.
Damage is caused both at the vegetative stage, leading to weakened stalks and stunted growth, and at the grain stage. When feeding on grain, the bug injects salivary enzymes that hydrolyze gluten proteins. This degradation renders the flour unsuitable for baking, as the dough loses its structural integrity and elasticity, resulting in poor quality bread and significantly lower market value.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of the Sunn pest. Key strategies include:
- Early harvesting of crops to minimize the exposure window for nymph feeding.
- Post-harvest tillage to destroy overwintering sites and reduce population densities.
- Monitoring of field populations to determine precise timing for chemical interventions.
- Application of selective insecticides when the density of nymphs exceeds the established economic threshold.
