Moorish shield bug

Systematic position. The Moorish shield bug (Eurygaster meridionalis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae. It is a member of the shield bug group, often referred to as sunn pests. These insects are significant pests of cereals and require specific attention due to their ability to degrade crop quality through their feeding habits.

Host crops. This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. When primary food sources are scarce, the bugs may also inhabit wild grasses, which act as secondary hosts and reservoirs, allowing the population to survive and spread to neighboring agricultural fields.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The bugs overwinter as adults in leaf litter or forested areas. In the spring, they migrate to cereal fields. After mating, females lay eggs on the leaves of host plants. The nymphs develop through several stages, feeding on the plant sap until they reach adulthood.

Nature of damage and pest status. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking the sap. Feeding on stems during the early growth stages results in stunted plant growth or the development of whiteheads. Feeding on developing kernels is particularly damaging, as the bugs inject saliva containing enzymes that break down gluten, rendering the grain unsuitable for flour production.

Protection measures. Effective control relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep plowing to destroy overwintering sites, and weed control are essential. When pest populations exceed economic thresholds, farmers should apply registered insecticides, preferably targeting the younger nymphal stages to prevent significant grain quality loss.
