Description

Systematic position. Euzophera aglaeella is a species of moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Pyralidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in arboriculture, specifically targeting woody plant species where its larvae develop beneath the bark layer.

Host plants. The primary hosts include various trees within the Rosaceae family. Fruit-bearing trees like apple, pear, and quince are most susceptible, although the insect can also be found on ornamental hawthorns or wild relatives within the same botanical group.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four main stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically emerge in spring, and females deposit eggs on the bark surfaces or near existing wounds. Larvae hatch and immediately bore into the bark, constructing galleries where they feed and develop throughout the season.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of the larvae destroys the cambium and phloem layers of the host tree. This disruption of nutrient transport leads to weakened tree vigor, reduced fruit yield, and can cause localized dieback or the death of younger trees if infestation levels are sufficiently high.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. This includes removing dead or infested wood, painting trunks with lime wash to prevent egg-laying, and applying selective insecticides during the peak flight period of adult moths. Regular inspection of the bark for entry holes or frass is crucial for early detection.
