Pine shoot moths

The genus Evetria, often taxonomically associated with Rhyacionia, belongs to the Tortricidae family of the order Lepidoptera. These insects are significant pests of coniferous trees, particularly pine species. They are widely recognized in forestry for causing extensive damage to young plantations, leading to stunted growth and structural defects in valuable timber stocks.

These moths specifically target various species of pine (Pinus). The larvae (caterpillars) are internal feeders, boring into buds and young shoots. This feeding habit is particularly devastating for young trees, as it destroys the terminal leader, which is responsible for the height growth of the pine tree, often leading to permanent malformation.

The life cycle of the pine shoot moth typically involves one generation per year. Winter is spent as a larva inside the host plant, often within a silken hibernaculum near the buds or protected by resinous deposits. During the spring, larvae resume feeding, tunneling through the center of shoots. Adult moths emerge in early summer to mate and lay eggs on the needles or stem scales.

Damage is characterized by distinct signs such as the presence of resin masses, known as «pitch bells,» at the site of entry. As larvae tunnel, the attacked shoot may droop, wither, and eventually turn brown. The resulting damage causes a loss of vertical dominance, often resulting in bushy or crooked trees that lack commercial value.

Effective management requires a combination of silvicultural practices and chemical control. Key strategies include:

• Removal and destruction of infested shoots before larval emergence.
• Application of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity.
• Use of systemic insecticides during the sensitive egg-hatching phase.
• Promoting diverse forest stands to minimize population outbreaks.
