Evetria colfaxiana is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely recognized among forestry professionals as a major threat to coniferous seed production, particularly targeting the developing reproductive cones of various pine species.

The host range of Evetria colfaxiana primarily includes different pine species, with occasional infestations observed on other related conifers. Because the larvae feed exclusively inside the cones, the pest directly impacts the economic output of seed orchards, rendering seeds inviable and reducing the overall quality and quantity of the harvest.

The life cycle of this moth is synchronized with the development of the host tree's cones. Adult moths emerge and lay eggs on young, developing cones. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the cone scales to feed on the internal tissues, including the seed embryos. This feeding behavior protects the larvae from many external factors, making them difficult to eradicate once established.

Damage assessment involves looking for frass (excrement) mixed with dried resin on the exterior of the cones, which indicates internal infestation. Infested cones typically exhibit deformation, premature browning, or early abscission. In severe infestations, the yield of healthy seeds from an affected tree can be reduced to near zero, causing significant financial loss.
