The biology of this species is complex, involving a holometabolous life cycle: egg, three larval instars, puparium, and adult. The adult flies are free-living and consume floral nectar, which is essential for their longevity and reproductive success. The female seeks out host larvae, depositing eggs on their cuticle or near them, ensuring the next generation has immediate access to a food source.

In terms of host interaction, the larvae of Exorista caryae are internal parasites. They consume the host tissue slowly, which allows the host to remain active for most of its life stage until the final larval instar stage of the fly.
