Description
The olive mealybug (Farinococcus olivaceus) is a significant pest belonging to the Pseudococcidae family and the order Hemiptera. It is primarily known for infesting olive trees, where it can cause considerable economic damage if populations are not managed correctly and in a timely manner.
The primary host for this species is the olive tree (Olea europaea). The insects tend to congregate in protected areas such as leaf axils, underneath the bark of younger twigs, and around the fruit stalks. During high-density infestations, they can cover extensive parts of the branches, negatively affecting the overall health and vigor of the tree.
The biology of F. olivaceus involves specific developmental stages, with females often protected by a thick waxy secretion. This coating serves as a barrier against environmental stressors and many traditional chemical treatments. The life cycle can be rapid under warm climate conditions, leading to overlapping generations throughout the growing season.
The pest causes damage by feeding on the plant's sap, which leads to leaf yellowing, stunting of new growth, and premature fruit drop. Furthermore, their excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and fruits, further stressing the tree and reducing the marketability of the harvested olives.
Integrated pest management (IPM) for this species includes several critical strategies:
