Description
The striped mealybug (Ferrisia virgata) is a significant pest belonging to the Pseudococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. Recognized by its distinct dark longitudinal stripes on the body, this insect is a notorious polyphage known for causing economic losses in both agricultural fields and indoor cultivation environments.
This species exhibits a wide host range, attacking over 100 different plant families. Key crops susceptible to its infestation include cocoa, coffee, cotton, citrus, mango, and various ornamental plants. Its ability to infest various plant parts, including stems, leaves, and fruits, makes it highly versatile and damaging.
The biology of the striped mealybug is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive rates. Females produce long, white, wax-covered ovisacs containing hundreds of eggs. Once hatched, the nymphs, known as crawlers, move actively across the host plant to find suitable feeding sites. Temperature is a key driver, with warmer climates significantly shortening their life cycle.
Feeding damage occurs through the extraction of plant sap, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and potential dieback. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the leaves and severely limits photosynthesis. In high-value crops, this contamination can make the harvest completely unmarketable.
Effective management relies on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes the implementation of cultural practices, such as removing infested plant material, and the use of systemic insecticides. Biological control programs, utilizing parasitoid wasps like Leptomastix spp. or generalist predators, have also proven effective in suppressing populations in greenhouse conditions.
