Description
The olive scale (Filippia oleae) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is primarily recognized as a damaging agent in agricultural systems, posing a serious threat to evergreen fruit crops and various ornamental plants throughout Mediterranean-type climates.
This pest mainly infests olive trees (Olea europaea), as well as citrus fruits, fig trees, and several other Mediterranean evergreen species. The economic impact is linked to both direct sap extraction and the physiological weakening of the plants, resulting in reduced commercial yields and potential tree decline if the infestation is left uncontrolled.
The biological cycle consists of distinct stages including eggs, nymphs (crawlers), and sessile adults. The female develops a protective waxy covering, which provides significant resistance to environmental stressors and conventional pesticide applications. The ability to reproduce via parthenogenesis in many populations ensures rapid colonization of susceptible hosts.
Damage occurs when both nymphs and adults insert their mouthparts into plant tissues to feed on phloem sap. Beyond the nutritional loss, these insects secrete honeydew, which serves as a medium for the colonization of sooty mold fungi. This black fungal layer covers leaves and stems, severely inhibiting the photosynthetic process and plant respiration.
Integrated pest management strategies include:
- Pruning and canopy management to promote airflow and light penetration.
- Applying horticultural oils during the crawler stage to effectively smother the insects.
- Using systemic insecticides timed with peak crawler activity for optimal results.
- Preserving beneficial natural enemies, such as parasitic wasps, to suppress pest populations.
