It is particularly problematic in systems where soft-bodied insects, such as aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects, are present, as the ants actively protect these pests from their natural predators.
Biology and life cycle: Formica gagates undergoes a complete metamorphosis. The colony structure is highly organized, centered around a queen who lays eggs that develop into larvae, pupae, and finally adults. The colony survives the winter by retreating into deep soil chambers, resuming intense foraging and expansion activity as soon as soil temperatures rise in the spring.
