Mosquitofish

The mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) is a small, freshwater, live-bearing fish belonging to the family Poeciliidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Originally introduced globally as a biological control agent for malaria-carrying mosquito larvae, it has since become a notorious invasive species that significantly disrupts local aquatic ecosystems and poses serious challenges to aquaculture.

In agricultural settings, particularly in rice paddies and fish farming, the mosquitofish is regarded as a pest. It competes aggressively for food with the fry of economically important fish species. By preying upon the eggs and larvae of native species, the mosquitofish effectively reduces the biodiversity and total productivity of water bodies, causing substantial economic losses in commercial fish farming.

The biological success of the mosquitofish stems from its remarkable resilience and high reproductive rate. As a live-bearer, it bypasses the vulnerable egg stage, leading to higher juvenile survival rates. The species displays extreme tolerance to varying water temperatures, low oxygen levels, and high salinity, allowing it to colonize diverse environments where native fish would struggle to survive.

The damage caused by Gambusia is multifaceted. They are known to exhibit aggressive behavior, frequently nipping at the fins of other fish and consuming aquatic invertebrates that are vital for the health of an aquatic ecosystem. This unchecked predation leads to the displacement of native species, ultimately altering the community structure of ponds and irrigation systems.

Control measures are essential for managing infestations in managed water bodies. Effective strategies include:

• Periodic draining and lime treatment of pond bottoms.
• Installing high-density mesh filters at water inlets to exclude the fish.
• Introducing native predatory fish to naturally regulate population numbers.
• Biological and physical habitat modifications to make the environment less suitable for mosquitofish colonization.
