Eastern mosquitofish

The Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) is a small freshwater fish of the Poeciliidae family, order Cyprinodontiformes. Originally introduced globally for mosquito control, it has evolved into a persistent invasive pest, causing significant ecological disruption and economic damage within aquaculture and controlled aquatic cultivation systems.

This species poses a threat to aquatic crops such as rice and various water plants cultivated in aquaponic or hydroponic settings. By disrupting the natural microbial and zooplankton communities essential for nutrient cycling, the mosquitofish indirectly hinders plant growth and exacerbates the incidence of root-related diseases in managed water environments.

The biology of Gambusia holbrooki is marked by its rapid reproductive rate and extreme adaptability. As a live-bearing fish, it reproduces frequently throughout the warmer months. Its ability to tolerate low oxygen levels and varying water temperatures allows it to thrive in neglected irrigation channels and stagnant water systems, making it difficult to eradicate once established.

Damage is characterized by the systematic removal of beneficial microorganisms and invertebrates that aid in the decomposition of organic matter. By outcompeting native fauna and disturbing the substrate, the mosquitofish reduces the nutrient availability for aquatic plants. Additionally, in high densities, they can cause physical damage to delicate root systems through constant foraging and territorial behavior.
