The Western Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes and the family Poeciliidae. Originally introduced for mosquito control, this species has become a globally recognized invasive pest that disrupts the ecological stability of irrigation systems, canals, and rice paddies, significantly impacting agro-ecosystems.

The primary concern regarding this fish in agricultural environments is its impact on integrated rice farming and pond aquaculture. Although it does not consume crops directly, it exerts intense predation pressure on zooplankton and beneficial aquatic insects. These organisms are vital for controlling pests and maintaining water quality, and their removal can trigger pest outbreaks and decline in crop yields.

The biology of the Western Mosquitofish is defined by its extreme adaptability and high reproductive rate. Being a live-bearing species, it can quickly colonize diverse water bodies, including seasonal irrigation ditches. Their ability to tolerate poor water quality and varying temperatures ensures their survival and dominance, often resulting in complete replacement of native fish species in affected areas.
