Description

Geococcus is a genus of insects belonging to the family Pseudococcidae (mealybugs), within the order Hemiptera. These pests are specialized root-feeders that spend their entire life cycle in the soil, making them difficult to detect until significant plant damage has already occurred.

These insects primarily infest potted plants, succulents, cacti, and various ornamental bulbs. By feeding on the roots, they disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients, which often leads to the stunted growth or death of the host plant if left untreated.

The biology of Geococcus revolves around its subterranean existence. Females produce protective waxy, white, cotton-like secretions that harbor their eggs within the soil profile. The mobile nymph stage, or crawler, actively explores the root zone to find suitable feeding sites, spreading the infestation throughout the root ball.

Damage is characterized by general plant weakness, chlorosis, and wilting despite adequate watering. A visual inspection of the root ball will reveal colonies of small, white, wax-covered insects and patches of white, powdery residue clinging to the roots and the inner surfaces of the container.

Integrated management strategies for controlling Geococcus include:

  • replacing infested soil with sterile, high-quality potting media;
  • drenching the root zone with systemic insecticides;
  • washing and treating roots during the repotting process;
  • quarantining new plants to prevent the introduction of the pest;
  • maintaining proper sanitation of pots and cultivation tools.
