Rice root mealybug

Geococcus oryzae

Description

Geococcus oryzae, commonly known as the rice root mealybug, belongs to the family Pseudococcidae under the order Hemiptera. This pest is a subterranean insect that resides in the soil, feeding specifically on the root systems of graminaceous plants. Its cryptic lifestyle makes it a challenging threat in rice cultivation.

The primary host for this pest is rice, although it can survive on various weeds within the fields. Because it remains hidden beneath the soil surface, farmers often overlook the early stages of infestation. The mealybug thrives in the humid conditions provided by paddy fields, allowing it to multiply rapidly and spread across the root zone of entire crops.

Regarding its biology, the female mealybug lays eggs near the roots of the host plant. The nymphs, upon hatching, act as the main dispersal stage, moving through the soil to find new roots to colonize. They feed by piercing the root tissues and extracting plant sap, which siphons off energy that would otherwise be used for vegetative growth and grain filling.

Damage symptoms usually manifest as stunted plant growth, yellowish foliage, and a general lack of vigor in the rice plants. Because the roots are damaged, the plants cannot effectively absorb water or nutrients, leading to increased susceptibility to secondary infections and environmental stress, ultimately causing significant yield reduction in heavily infested areas.

Integrated management practices for controlling the rice root mealybug include:

  • Systematic monitoring of root health during early growth stages.
  • Implementation of proper crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
  • Removal of host weeds during the off-season to minimize reservoirs.
  • Application of specialized soil-applied insecticides during land preparation or early irrigation phases.
